Great news for Filipino drivers! Over the next five years, at least 28,000 job opportunities will open up in Japan and various European countries. These positions include taxi, bus, truck, and train drivers, offering competitive salaries and exciting perks.
Jobs in Japan
According to Japanese Labor Attaché Suzuki Yuki, Japan alone will need 24,000 taxi drivers and 4,000 train drivers. The monthly salary ranges from ₱58,000 to ₱65,000.
But there’s a catch: applicants must have a Nihongo language proficiency certificate. Don’t worry, though! The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), through Undersecretary Py Caunan, assured that workers won’t need to pay a single peso for language training. These costs will be covered by the employers.
Opportunities in Europe
Meanwhile, European countries like Slovenia, Austria, and the Czech Republic are also in need of Filipino drivers. These include truck, bus, and taxi drivers, with monthly salaries ranging from ₱55,000 to over ₱142,000. Unlike Japan, applicants for European jobs need to be fluent in English.
Challenges for Applicants
Despite the abundance of jobs, many Filipinos may not yet qualify. According to Raquel Espina Bracero from the Philippine Association of Service Exporters, Inc., the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) should provide specialized training to help Filipino drivers meet international standards.
Here’s why:
- Automation of Vehicles – Many foreign vehicles use advanced automated systems.
- Automatic Transmission – Unlike manual vehicles common in the Philippines, these countries use automatic transmission.
- Longer Buses – European buses are longer, requiring specific driving skills.
Taxi driver Rexon Noleal shared that free training would be life-changing for young drivers like him who dream of working abroad. “Sana po may free trainings para mas maraming opportunities,” he said.
DMW and TESDA Collaboration
The DMW is now working closely with TESDA to develop upskilling programs for aspiring overseas drivers.
Worker Protection is Key
While job opportunities are exciting, DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac emphasized the importance of protecting Filipino workers. He highlighted that hiring should always be safe and ethical. “Before issuing visas, host countries must ensure they coordinate with DMW to safeguard worker welfare,” he said.
What’s Next?
With thousands of jobs waiting, now’s the time for Filipino drivers to gear up. Thanks to government efforts, better training and worker protection will help make these dreams a reality!
