Sara Duterte Scraps Japan Trip; VP Cautions on Schedule Leaks

Vice President Sara Duterte Cancels Japan Trip Amid Transparency Concerns

In a surprising twist, Vice President Sara Duterte has canceled her planned trip to Japan, set for August 19 to 24. This announcement came from Malacañang Palace on Tuesday evening, just after Press Officer Claire Castro clarified some details surrounding the travel authority.

Initially, Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez had stated that the trip was personal and incurred no costs to the government. However, less than 24 hours later, the Vice President’s team requested a cancellation of the travel authority issued on August 17.

“It’s true there was a travel authority for Japan,” Castro confirmed, emphasizing that the records are accurate. But the plot thickened when Duterte issued a statement expressing her worries about disclosing her itinerary. She noted, “I wish to remind the Office of the President that publicizing my schedule poses serious risks to my personal security.”

Her concerns are not unfounded; the political world can be unpredictable, and ensuring safety is of utmost importance. Yet, Castro retorted firmly, reminding everyone that as a public official, Duterte has a duty to be transparent about her actions. “Public funds are being spent on her security and staff,” she asserted. “The Filipino people deserve to know where their money goes.”

Casting a light on this issue, Castro revealed that the government spends around 7 million pesos ($126,000) on the Vice President’s security for her foreign excursions. This raised essential questions about accountability and transparency in government expenditures.

The chain of events took another twist when the cancellation notice from the Office of the President arrived via email at approximately 4:08 p.m. on Tuesday. Castro noted the cancellation was sent electronically and not personally, which led to some delays in communication. The situation grew more intense as they confirmed the travel authority at 5:16 p.m., with the email reaching Duterte’s team at 6:07 p.m.

In a separate statement, Vice President Duterte highlighted the need for transparency not just for her office but for all government officials. “The Office of the President issues travel authorities to many government officials,” she pointed out. “It is only fair that the public is informed about the travel expenses and public funds used by these offices.”

Duterte’s call for comprehensive disclosure signals her desire for a broader conversation about government accountability—a topic that resonates deeply with citizens who often feel distanced from political realities.

With strong emotions and pressing concerns hanging in the air, this story highlights not only the complexities of political life but also the importance of transparency and public trust in governance. As the nation watches, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will unfold.
