Prosecutors Demand Sara Duterte’s Presence in Impeachment Trial

The Impeachment Trial: A Call for Accountability

In a charged atmosphere, the House prosecution panel is eagerly awaiting a crucial moment in the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Representative Ysabel Maria Jorge Zamora-Jornada, a dedicated member of the prosecution team, expressed her hope that the Vice President would finally take the stand to address the serious allegations against her.

“We want our Vice President, our respondent, to appear,” Zamora-Jornada stated passionately during an interview with Super Radyo dzBB. “And we believe the public wants the same. It’s important for her to face the court and answer the claims that have been made against her. She really should show up at her impeachment trial.”

The urgency in her voice is palpable. On the second day of the impeachment proceedings, although Vice President Duterte was present at the Senate, it was merely to meet with her defense lawyers. She later held a brief press conference, leaving many questions unanswered.

To further complicate matters, the prosecution plans to present Zuleika Lopez, the chief of staff for the Office of the Vice President, as a witness on July 14. House prosecutor and Iloilo Representative Lorenz Defensor revealed that this decision follows the defense’s argument stating Lopez’s detention in the House and subsequent transfer to the Correctional Institute for Women in 2024 led Duterte to make threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family.

Despite the gravity of the situation, there remains uncertainty regarding whether the Vice President will appear in the coming days. Zamora-Jornada conveyed, “We have no idea if she will attend. The only thing we’ve heard is that they inquired about bringing catering services into the Senate—things like a refrigerator or coffee maker. She might come, but we just don’t know for certain.”

The stakes couldn’t be higher. The prosecution aims to spotlight Lopez’s testimony regarding Article 4 of the Articles of Impeachment, which accuses the Vice President of culpable violation of the Constitution, high crimes, and betraying public trust. Allegations include making grave threats involving the assassination of the President and inciting sedition against the republic.

With a nation watching, the call for transparency and accountability rings louder than ever. The impeachment trial is not just a political affair; it’s an emotional battleground where the integrity of leadership is being fiercely debated. As everyone hopes for clarity, the question remains: Will Vice President Duterte finally step forward and make her voice heard in this historic trial?
