Metro Manila Schools Transition to Alternative Learning Amid Rainy Season
As the skies darken and heavy rains sweep across Metro Manila and 13 surrounding provinces, families are bracing for a shift—both in education and work. On Thursday, September 10, 2026, public and private schools will transition to alternative learning modes, a necessary response to the ongoing Southwest Monsoon rains.
This decision came straight from Malacañang, following the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. With PAGASA’s dire warnings of heavy rainfall looming, it was clear that changes were needed to ensure safety and continuity in education.
The areas affected include the National Capital Region (NCR) and provinces such as La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro.
In a memorandum, the government stated: “Unless otherwise directed by their respective Local Chief Executives, alternative learning modes for classes at all levels in public and private schools shall be implemented in the aforementioned areas.” This means that students will adapt to new formats of learning—from online classes to other creative alternatives.
However, it’s not just schools that are feeling the impact. Government offices will also be adopting alternative work arrangements to ensure worker safety during this inclement weather. But there’s good news: agencies focused on delivering essential services—like health and disaster preparedness—will continue their operations.
