BSP: No Reproduction of PH Banknotes Allowed!

Don’t Be Fooled: Duplicating Peso Bills is Illegal

This past Saturday, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) issued an urgent reminder to everyone: Duplicating our beloved peso bills is illegal. This warning comes in light of misleading claims spreading across social media, suggesting that photocopied bills could be used for transactions.

Imagine walking into a store confidently handing over a photocopied bill, only to be met with confusion and refusal. Unfortunately, this scenario could easily become a reality if we don’t pay attention to the facts.

The BSP didn’t just give a casual nudge. They stated clearly: “Reproducing Philippine banknotes without prior BSP authorization is against the law.” It’s a serious matter, highlighting the importance of understanding our currency’s regulations.

A Misunderstanding Spreads

The concern arose after a comment by Atty. Amando Virgil Ligutan, a prosecution lawyer in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. His remarks were taken out of context on social media, leading many to incorrectly believe that photocopied banknotes could be treated as legal tender. An audacious idea, but completely false!

What Does the Law Say?

The BSP referred to Circular No. 829, issued in 2014, which explicitly states that “no person or entity may print, photocopy, distribute, or use any image or facsimile of a Philippine banknote” without its approval. This includes black and white, color, or any mixture thereof.

What’s more alarming? Violating this circular could land you in legal trouble, with penalties ranging from five to ten years behind bars. That’s a hefty price to pay for a misunderstanding!

Exceptions to the Rule

Now, it’s important to note that the BSP does allow for some exceptions. They might authorize reproducing peso bills for educational, historical, or numismatic purposes—provided it helps promote currency integrity. But, rest assured, using photocopied bills for your morning coffee is definitely not one of those exceptions!

Stay Informed

So, the next time you come across a flashy post claiming that photocopied pesos can be used in stores, remember this official reminder from the BSP. It’s always best to verify the facts before making financial decisions. Protecting our currency and ensuring its integrity is a responsibility we all share.

Let’s be smart, informed citizens and steer clear of myths that could lead us astray. Spread the word and help your friends understand the importance of honoring our currency. Remember, knowledge is power!
