Recently, tragedy struck in Caloocan and Cavite, where two motorcycle taxi riders lost their lives at the hands of thieves posing as passengers. This heartbreaking incident serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers that loom on the streets for riders who are simply trying to make a living.

Kier Gabriel Tampos, Ph.D., a seasoned criminologist and certified Criminal Profiling Specialist, expressed his deep condolences for the victims, revealing that one was a former student of his. The suspect initially hired him in Manila, only to lead him to a grim fate. “Events are happening quickly,” Tampos notes. “Every week, we hear about more crimes, especially those targeting motorcycle riders.”
Understanding the Target
These brave riders often find themselves in precarious situations. Unfortunately, they are often targets for thieves because motorcycles can be sold quickly, with stolen bikes fetching prices between P20,000 and P50,000. Additionally, many riders work early mornings, making them vulnerable.
A Simple Survival Guide: T.A.S.
To help combat these growing threats, Dr. Tampos offers a vital strategy known as T.A.S. – Look, Leave, and Follow.
1. Look: Be vigilant. After a passenger disembarks, take a moment to observe them closely. Are they carrying something suspicious, like a knife or ice pick? Notice your surroundings.
2. Leave: If you see any signs of danger, be prepared to escape. If a passenger brandishes a weapon, don’t hesitate—run! Your safety is paramount.
3. Follow: If you find yourself in a critical situation where escape isn’t an option, comply with the thief’s demands. “Life is more valuable than material things,” Dr. Tampos stresses. Hand over your belongings, and focus on finding an opportunity to get away safely.
In a recent incident in Pandi, Bulacan, a store was also targeted. Tampos emphasizes the importance of preparation: “Lock the store and ensure all employees are ready.” He highlights that split-second decisions can determine one’s safety.
Trust Your Instincts
Listening to one’s instincts can also be a key defense. “Always be on guard,” urges Tampos. “Observe your surroundings and trust your gut feelings. If someone gives off a negative vibe, steer clear of them.”
Romeo Maglunsod, chairperson of the Motorcycle Taxi Community Alliance, adds additional safety tips for riders. He advises dropping off passengers in well-lit areas, such as in front of homes or offices, to minimize risks.
