Yellow Alert: The Visayas Grid Faces Power Challenges
On July 1, 2026, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) declared a yellow alert for the Visayas grid. This alert comes as a response to a troubling situation: major coal plants in the region are struggling to meet the high demand for electricity.
Imagine this: the alert, which lasts from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., signifies a critical moment. It means the available power isn’t enough to safely handle unexpected issues that could arise in the grid. With an available capacity of just 2,599 megawatts (MW), the grid is dangerously close to the peak demand of 2,411 MW. Unfortunately, a staggering 935.3 MW is currently out of commission.
What’s causing this power crisis? The NGCP points to the prolonged outages of several key power plants, including Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) 1 and 2, as well as Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) unit 3. These shutdowns have been extensive and troubling. Just take a look:
– Two plants have been unable to operate since early July 2026.
– Eight additional plants have been offline since June 2026.
– The outages go back even further: seven plants since May 2026, one since March 2026, and others dating back to 2021.
Adding to the concern, there are currently 17 plants running below their full capacity.
This situation is more than just numbers; it’s about the people who rely on steady electricity for their homes, businesses, and daily lives. As families prepare for the evening, they can’t help but wonder: will the lights stay on?
As we navigate these challenges, it’s crucial to stay informed. The energy landscape in the Visayas is shifting, and together, we can work towards solutions that ensure a brighter, more reliable future for everyone.
