Santa Ursula Church in Binangonan Named Cultural Treasure

The historic Santa Ursula Church in Binangonan, Rizal, built in 1612, has officially been declared a National Cultural Treasure (NCT) by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). The recognition highlights its rich history, unique Baroque-style architecture, and irreplaceable artifacts that date back to the 17th to 19th centuries.

A Celebration of Heritage

The grand declaration ceremony on March 2, 2025, was marked by a Holy Mass led by Bishop Ruperto Cruz Santos of the Diocese of Antipolo. Local leaders, cultural officials, and parishioners gathered to witness the momentous occasion. A festive performance of “Awit kay Santa Ursula” by Banda Central No. Inc. filled the air with joy and pride.

Rev. Fr. Aguedo A. Gula, the church’s parish priest, described the recognition as a blessing for the people of Binangonan. Chairman Victorino Mapa Manalo of the NCCA personally proclaimed the church’s NCT status, emphasizing its architectural beauty, artistic influences, and deep historical roots.

A Legacy of Art and Architecture

The Santa Ursula Church is known for its intricate wooden ceiling logs, which experts say can no longer be reproduced today, proving their antiquity and craftsmanship. The original altarpiece, paintings, and retablo remain well-preserved, offering a glimpse into centuries of religious artistry and devotion.

Adding to the celebration, the Coro Buenviaje choir, under the direction of Jose “Joey” Soliman Jr., performed a Missa Cantata featuring compositions by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab.

A National Honor

Santa Ursula Church is now one of four churches in Rizal declared a National Cultural Treasure for 2024-2025, alongside churches in Angono, Baras, and Morong. This prestigious recognition is given to sites of exceptional cultural, historical, and artistic significance, ensuring their protection and preservation for future generations.

The Santa Ursula Parish stands as a symbol of faith, heritage, and national pride, reminding Filipinos of the rich history embedded in its sacred walls.
