Prosecutors Wrap Up Evidence Against Marcoleta on Day One

A Swift Start to Justice: The Marcoleta Plunder Case Trials

In a remarkable turn of events, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla recently announced that prosecutors have swiftly wrapped up their evidence presentation against Senator Rodante Marcoleta on the very first day of his trial for plunder. This groundbreaking development, reported by Raffy Tima on “24 Oras,” marks an unprecedented pace in the history of the Office of the Ombudsman.

Just three months and three days after formal charges were lodged against him on July 3, the prosecution laid out their entire case at the Sandiganbayan. Marcoleta stands accused alongside former House lawmaker Mike Defensor and businessmen Joseph Espiritu and Aristotle Viray. The speed at which the case is unfolding has caught everyone’s attention, with Remulla declaring, “This is the fastest a case has ever been resolved in our office.”

Reflecting on the process, Remulla stated. “We rested our case; we presented our evidence. This means that if it took us three months to present everything, then his team will need to do the same.”

The foundation of the case lies in a startling admission from Marcoleta himself. He acknowledged accepting ₱75 million as a campaign donation while serving as a lawmaker—a fact that he failed to disclose in his Statement of Contributions and Expenditures. Remulla simplified this legal dilemma, saying, “The core of Senator Marcoleta’s case is purely legal. Everything has been admitted, and now it boils down to one question: Did he commit plunder?”

Interestingly, the speed of the trial was partly due to Marcoleta’s own request for bail. This required the prosecution to present their evidence in a more urgent manner, with most facts going uncontested. Remulla pointed out that Marcoleta had, in a way, “brought it upon himself.”

Looking ahead, the Ombudsman expressed hope that the defense would also move quickly in presenting their case. Interestingly, the prosecution did not call witnesses for Marcoleta’s co-accused, which could further expedite the process.

As the legal clock ticks, Remulla boldly suggested, “We might be breaking records here. If the Sandiganbayan truly fulfills its role, we could see this case resolved in less than a year.”

In a world where justice often moves at a snail’s pace, this trial stands out as a beacon of hope and efficiency. Only time will tell where this journey will lead, but one thing is certain: the people are watching closely, eager for answers and accountability.
