Putin Backs Pope Leo’s Call for Aid to Ukrainian Town

A Call for Compassion: Putin, Pope, and the Plight of Oleshky

In a poignant moment of collaboration and concern, President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in a phone call with Pope Leo, addressing a dire situation unfolding in the Russian-controlled town of Oleshky, Ukraine. The Pope reached out to Putin, earnestly asking for assistance in getting vital supplies to the beleaguered residents of this town, where a significant humanitarian crisis has taken root.

Since being captured by Russian forces in February 2022, Oleshky has seen the shadows of despair grow longer. The residents, once vibrant and hopeful, now face a deepening food crisis that threatens their very existence. Could this be a turning point?

During the call, the Pope’s voice carried a deep, resonating worry—one that echoes through the walls of this besieged city. He expressed “deep concern” for the residents, urging a ceasefire that would allow aid and food to flow freely into the town. The Vatican released a statement emphasizing their commitment to creating safe conditions for Oleshky’s population and organizing critical supplies.

However, as the Kremlin reported, there was no mention of a ceasefire. Instead, they confirmed a mutual agreement to cooperate on humanitarian efforts, a slender hope that underscores the complexities of the conflict. In stark contrast, both Russia and Ukraine continue to blame each other for obstructing these essential supplies, reflecting the tangled web of this ongoing crisis.

As emotions run high, it’s worth noting that this was not the first conversation between the Pope and Putin; they previously spoke in June 2025. The Pope, who is currently recuperating at Rome’s Gemelli hospital following surgery for lung cancer, conveyed through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, that reaching out to plead for Oleshky was a personal initiative.

Despite the challenges he faces, Pope Leo, at 71, is showing steady improvement and is determined to continue his work. His resilience during this time is commendable and serves as a reminder of the strength found in compassion and leadership.

In Oleshky, where before the war there were 24,000 souls, only about 1,700 remain—each day a battle for survival much less for sustenance. Among them are 47 children, innocent lives caught in a storm of conflict, struggling to find even the most basic necessities.

As the world watches, the call for humanity rings louder. The people of Oleshky are not mere statistics—they are faces, dreams, families, and futures, yearning for hope amidst despair. Perhaps, with enough compassion and cooperation, this crisis can find a glimmer of light.

In the heart of Vatican City, the hope is that dialogue will lead to a resolution, and that acts of kindness can pave the way toward peace. As Pope Leo continues to advocate for the forgotten in this time of turmoil, the world can only hope that his efforts will not be in vain.
