Hope Amidst Hardship: Bringing Home Stranded OFWs from Saudi Arabia
In a heartening turn of events, two hundred Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) stranded in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, are finally set to return home to the Philippines. This news comes as a relief for many families anxiously awaiting their loved ones, who have faced challenging circumstances due to unexpected flight cancellations. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced that these flights will be covered by the government, allowing OFWs to come home without the burden of additional costs.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac shared the uplifting news, stating, “In Riyadh, per directive of President Bongbong Marcos, we shall bring home an initial 200 OFWs whose flights to Manila have been cancelled.” His words shine a light on the government’s commitment to its citizens abroad as they navigate through these trying times.
The airline cancellations are tied to ongoing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels based in Yemen. Major airlines, including Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific, have suspended flights in and out of Riyadh, causing significant stress for thousands. Philippine Airlines has halted operations until November 29, 2026, while Cebu Pacific has suspended its flights until October 31, 2026.
These hostilities escalated recently when King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was attacked twice, tragically leading to the loss of thirteen lives and leaving over 300 people injured. Among those injured were innocent civilians, further underscoring the urgency of the situation.
In light of these developments, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah have urged Filipinos residing in Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. An advisory issued on October 9 emphasized the importance of caution, reminding everyone to stay alert in this unpredictable environment.
As we celebrate the return of these OFWs, our thoughts are firmly with those still in peril. We hope that this initial group marks the beginning of a larger effort to reunite families and restore peace. In times of uncertainty, it’s the support and resilience of our community that can light the way home.
Let’s continue to uplift our OFWs, hold onto hope, and keep each other safe.
