President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed optimism about deepening ties between the Philippines and the United Kingdom, emphasizing the growing number of Filipinos living and working in the UK.
During his meeting with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs David Lammy at Malacañang, Marcos highlighted the strong bond between the two nations. He acknowledged the UK’s warm welcome to Filipino professionals and workers, which he sees as a testament to the strengthening relationship between the countries.
A Growing Filipino Community in the UK
Marcos noted that around 200,000 Filipinos are currently residing in the UK, contributing to industries like healthcare, IT, aviation, hospitality, and e-commerce. Since 2001, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of Filipino engineers and IT specialists working for British technology and telecommunications companies.
PH-UK Partnership on Key Global Issues
Lammy’s visit aimed to boost the Enhanced Partnership between the Philippines and the UK. His discussions with Marcos covered trade and investments, maritime cooperation, climate change, and environmental protection.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting, Lammy and Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo signed the Philippines-UK Joint Framework, a strategic plan to further strengthen bilateral ties in the coming years.
A Shared Vision for Stability and Growth
Lammy emphasized the importance of collaboration in a time of global uncertainty, stating, “We must strengthen ties with like-minded partners, like the Philippines.”
Manalo also reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to working with the UK on defense, security, human rights, and economic resilience, ensuring that both nations continue to grow together.
With both countries eager to deepen their relationship, this partnership is expected to open more opportunities for Filipinos and foster closer cooperation on international issues.
