Pinoys in Hong Kong Urged: Stay Away from Ebola Zones!

Vital Advisory for Filipinos in Hong Kong: Stay Safe Amid Ebola Concerns

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong is sounding a crucial alarm for Filipinos living and traveling in the area. With recent outbreaks of Ebola reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, the consulate is urging the community to exercise caution and avoid travel to these regions unless absolutely necessary.

Stay Informed and Cautious

In a heartfelt message posted on its Facebook page, the consulate shared urgent guidance alongside information from Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP). The CHP reassured the public that, as of now, there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in Hong Kong. However, they emphasized the importance of staying vigilant during this critical time.

Essential Safety Tips

To help safeguard against the virus while traveling, the CHP has recommended some straightforward yet effective precautions:

1. Wash Your Hands: Be diligent about washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before touching your face (eyes, nose, mouth).

2. Avoid Close Contact: Keep your distance from anyone displaying symptoms like fever or malaise. Steer clear of individuals’ blood or body fluids, as well as items that may have come into contact with them.

3. Say No to Wildlife: Whether you’re an adventurous traveler or just passing through, avoid any interactions with animals, especially those known to harbor the virus—think fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas, and even forest antelopes.

4. Cook Thoroughly: Make sure your food is properly cooked before diving in. This small step could make a world of difference.

Global Health Context

The seriousness of the situation should not be overlooked. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the Ebola outbreaks in Congo and Uganda as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern.” This alarming classification reflects the potential global threat posed by the Bundibugyo virus—a new strain of Ebola first recognized in the DRC back in 1976.

While vaccines and treatments exist for some strains, including the Zaire strain, the same cannot be said for Bundibugyo or Sudan virus disease. Nevertheless, the WHO assures that early supportive care—hydrating patients, managing symptoms, and continuous medical observation—can significantly improve survival rates.

Philippines Response

In a reassuring message, the Department of Health (DOH) declared that there are currently no Ebola cases in the Philippines. DOH spokesperson Undersecretary Albert Domingo emphasized, “Wala po, wala po. Hindi po talaga” – “None, none at all. There is really no reason to panic.”

The Bureau of Quarantine and the Epidemiology Bureau are actively monitoring individuals returning from affected regions, engaging in heightened surveillance to keep our communities safe.

Final Thoughts

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s vital to remain educated and take precautions. The safety of our families and communities relies on our diligence. Please heed the advice of health officials and stay well-informed.

Together, let’s prioritize our health, supporting one another through these challenging moments. Be proactive, stay safe, and remember that awareness is the key to prevention.
