The situation took a dire turn at Davao Mighty Steel, where over 300 workers faced sudden unemployment after a raid at the steel plant in Barangay Ilang, Bunawan. *“If this was truly a rescue operation, where is the rescue for workers who now face unemployment, uncertainty, and the prospect of feeding their families?”* the KMU-SMR asked rhetorically, echoing the feelings of countless affected workers. They called for immediate assistance, protection of workers’ rights, and accountability from the agencies behind these actions.
Jobs Lost, Lives Changed
The impact of these raids has been devastating. Just recently, Chuangxing Steel Inc. in Magalang, Pampanga, was ordered to shut down, resulting in job losses for 347 Filipino workers and 37 Chinese nationals. A previous raid in May at a Tagoloan steel plant in Misamis Oriental left around 316 workers jobless. The reasons for these operations ranged from the presence of undocumented workers, primarily from China, to serious allegations involving the use of industrial materials with radioactive substances and the production of substandard steel products.
