Flight and ground operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were temporarily suspended on Sunday evening, as a Lightning Red Alert was raised due to the prevailing weather conditions.

In an advisory, the MIAA said the red alert was issued at 6:23 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, prompting the suspension of operations as a safety measure to prevent untoward incidents during the prevalence of lightning.

The alert was then lowered to yellow alert status at 7:13 p.m., allowing operations to resume.

Further details on the flights affected were not immediately available.

The NAIA serves as the country’s main gateway, with the latest data available showing that it recorded 3.666 million passengers and 22,816 flights in April. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
