Marcos Gains Canadian Investments Amid Vancouver Protests

President Marcos Jr. Brings New Hope to Filipino Communities Through Investments in Canada

In a momentous trip to Vancouver, Canada, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. truly made waves by securing vital investment commitments from Canadian firms. The excitement was palpable, especially among the Filipino community who had gathered to hear the President speak about the promising outcomes of his international meetings.

During a heartfelt gathering, Marcos proudly shared, “I am pleased to report that these engagements have advanced concrete commitments and investment opportunities.” He emphasized key sectors poised for growth—mining critical minerals, information technology, business processing, and many emerging industries. His words resonated deeply with those present: “Mas maraming trabaho at pagkakataong kumita nang maayos, mas maginhawang pamumuhay ng ating mga kababayan at mas matibay na ekonomiya para sa ating mga pamilya.” In English, this translates to “more jobs, better income opportunities, a more comfortable life for our countrymen, and a stronger economy for our families.”

Imagine the hope in the room as families and friends listened, truly resonating with the potential for brighter futures.

One of the highlights of the investment announcements included Canadian gold and copper producer OceanaGold, which is set to invest an astounding US$1.9 billion (approximately P106.4 billion). Their plans for expansion in Nueva Vizcaya also include exploring potential operations through 2037—an enormous leap for job creation and economic stability.

Additionally, B2Gold, another key player in the mining industry, is preparing to invest US$14 million (about P784 million) to expand its solar power facility linked to the Masbate Gold Project. This facility has already made a significant impact, contributing a remarkable P10 billion in taxes to both national and local governments in 2025, solidifying its role as the biggest tax contributor in the Bicol Region.

However, the President’s trip wasn’t without challenges. Protests followed him from the Philippines to North America, with some Filipinos in Vancouver voicing their concerns over alleged government corruption. This backdrop created a complex atmosphere, yet the President remained resolute. Malacañang Palace made it clear that the administration would not be intimidated by these protests. “To those who intend to pressure the government to let individuals allegedly involved in anomalies evade accountability, do not even try,” warned Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro. Her words echoed Marcos’s steadfast commitment to integrity and justice, ensuring that “the government will not rest” until those responsible are held accountable.

Amidst such challenges, President Marcos Jr. and the Philippine delegation are expected to return home, embodying a sense of hope intertwined with resilience.

Their journey reflects a promise not just of economic progress, but a reaffirmation of the strength and solidarity of the Filipino people both at home and abroad. Each step taken in Vancouver has further solidified connections and showcased the unwavering spirit of the Filipino community, lighting a path toward a brighter future for all.

As the delegation wrapped up their visit, the anticipation for positive change in the Philippines felt more alive than ever. Colombia is brimming with hope, and as they look ahead, many now imagine a more prosperous tomorrow.
