Speaking during the commencement ceremony for the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy’s “Salighirang” Class of 2026 in San Narciso, Zambales, he delivered a heartfelt message that resonated deeply with the graduates and their families.
Reflecting on the challenges facing Filipino seafarers, President Marcos recalled a troubling episode where the livelihoods of approximately 50,000 seafarers onboard European Union-flagged ships were jeopardized. The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) had issued warnings due to the country’s failure to meet essential safety standards. “We could not allow the future of our Filipino seafarers to be placed in such a situation,” Marcos said, his voice steady yet filled with emotion. “And that is why your government acted immediately.”
With a sense of urgency, the President outlined the steps taken to strengthen maritime education and training in the Philippines. He highlighted improvements in certification systems, upgraded facilities, and collaboration with international partners. “We need to ensure that Philippine standards meet global expectations,” he emphasized, reminding everyone of the unwavering dedication to safeguarding the future of Filipino seafarers.
Amidst a backdrop of global uncertainty, President Marcos assured Filipino seafarers of the government’s unwavering support, particularly those navigating through turbulent waters affected by tensions in the Middle East. “In this difficult situation, your safety and welfare remain our priority,” he declared. “Your government will always be within reach, ready to help.”
The President also took a moment to celebrate the graduating class, exuding pride as he addressed them. “Soon, you will join thousands of Filipino seafarers—the most trusted mariners in the world,” he praised. “You carry the reputation of our nation wherever you go.” He urged them to embody attributes like competence, professionalism, and dedication, which have earned them respect on the international stage.
“Wherever the sea takes you—whether you serve under the Navy’s flag, guard our shores, or fly our colors as merchant marine officers—never forget to bring that light with you,” Marcos urged, closing with words of wisdom. “Carry yourselves with competence, lead with humility, and serve with integrity.”
As the “Salighirang” Class of 2026—comprising 327 bright, ambitious midshipmen—prepared to embark on their maritime journeys, they carry with them hopes and dreams. Among them, the valedictorian, Midshipman First Class Mark Owen Trilles from Tigaon, Camarines Sur, stands as a shining example of what can be achieved.
With every passing wave, the future remains bright for Filipino seafarers. As President Marcos stated, their journey is not just about navigating the waters but also about navigating life with the values that define the Filipino spirit—resilience, pride, and unwavering integrity.
