DHSUD Halts Housing Loan Payments After Mindanao Quake

DHSUD Takes Action: Compassion in the Wake of Disaster

On a heartfelt Wednesday, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) announced a significant change that aims to ease the burden on families affected by the recent earthquake in Mindanao. With empathy at the core of their efforts, DHSUD has ordered a moratorium on housing amortization payments to provide immediate relief to those who need it most.

A Call to Action

DHSUD Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling made it clear that the directive aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s commitment to promptly assist those impacted by the devastating earthquake. “During calamities like this, we must lighten the load for our fellow countrymen. Their safety and well-being come first,” Aliling emphasized.

In an effort to facilitate this support, Aliling instructed key shelter agencies—Pag-IBIG Fund, the National Housing Authority (NHA), Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC), and the National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation (NHMFC)—to implement the moratorium for qualified beneficiaries. Detailed guidelines will be provided shortly, ensuring that everyone affected has access to the aid they need.

Immediate Steps for Recovery

The DHSUD is not stopping there. They have activated regional shelter clusters to ensure preparedness and immediate delivery of shelter-related assistance. In a clear message shared on social media, the department announced that eligible members would see their monthly amortization payments deferred from June 8 to July 7, 2026, with the possibility of extending this relief depending on the ongoing assessment of damages.

The SHFC also reached out to affected community associations, assuring them that “your safety and well-being are our top priorities.” This heartfelt communication underscores the commitment to standing by citizens during tough times.

Extended Support from NHMFC

Further showcasing their dedication, the NHMFC has extended its existing moratorium for another three months, allowing qualified borrowers to temporarily defer their payments without incurring penalties. NHMFC President Renato Tobias highlighted this initiative not just as payment relief but as a heartfelt promise to support Filipino families during this challenging period. “We want to give you the flexibility to rebuild and move forward,” Tobias stated, echoing the sentiments of hope and resilience.

Ongoing Assistance and Resources

Throughout this period, borrowers who prefer to maintain their amortization payments will still have options available, ensuring they can manage their accounts without added stress.

In a proactive response, teams from both Pag-IBIG Fund and NHA have mobilized to provide direct assistance to earthquake victims. Mobile branches have been dispatched to General Santos and Dipolog City, while NHA teams are already on the ground to assess emergency shelter needs. Additionally, fellow citizens can avail themselves of insurance benefits through the Pag-IBIG Housing Loan Non-Life Insurance Claim, assisting homeowners in repairing and rehabilitating their damaged properties.

Committed to Community Care

As recovery efforts continue, Secretary Aliling has directed the DHSUD Regional Office 12 to conduct a thorough ground assessment, ensuring a swift and effective response to the needs of affected communities, particularly in regions declared under a state of calamity.

“We are in constant communication with local governments and other agencies to ensure we meet the immediate needs of families impacted by the earthquake,” Aliling reassured the public.

Through collective action, empathy, and unwavering commitment, the DHSUD is carving a path toward recovery and healing for families facing one of life’s toughest challenges. In times of disaster, it is not just about rebuilding homes; it’s about restoring hope and safety for everyone affected.

Moving Forward Together

As we move forward from this painful chapter, let’s remember the resilience that binds communities together. Through support and solidarity, we will rise and rebuild—stronger than before. Together, with the guidance and support of DHSUD, we can navigate these challenging times and emerge into brighter days ahead.
