Manila, Philippines – China has sent a strong warning to the Philippines, saying it will not stay silent if its safety feels threatened. During a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, Mao Ning, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made it clear:
“Our message to the Philippines is simple: China won’t stand by if its security is in danger. Refusing to change course will harm the Philippines’ own interests,” she said.
This warning comes after the United States deployed a powerful missile system, known as the Typhon Mid-Range Capability (MRC), in the Philippines. The system can carry regular or nuclear weapons, and China has repeatedly voiced its opposition to it.
Why Is China Concerned?
Mao Ning explained that the Typhon MRC is not just for defense—it’s designed for strategic attacks. By allowing this system in its territory, the Philippines is relying on the U.S. for its security. This decision, according to China, could lead to:
- Rising tensions in the region.
- A dangerous arms race where countries compete to build more weapons.
- Threats to regional peace and safety.
She questioned whether this move truly benefits the Philippines, suggesting it undermines the country’s independence in making foreign policy decisions.
“Whose interests are being served here?” Mao asked. “How can anyone call this an independent choice when it only creates more risks for the region?”
China’s message is clear: working with the U.S. in this way could make the Philippines less safe, not more.
