Bomb Hoax Threats Target European Flights Again!

European Skies Under Siege: The Haunting Wave of Hoax Bomb Threats

ROME, Italy – What was meant to be another ordinary day in the skies turned into a scene straight out of a thriller, as fear rippled through Europe on Thursday. Italian, French, and Bulgarian fighter jets took to the skies, scrambling to intercept a growing crisis that saw around 20 commercial flights targeted by a wave of hoax bomb threats for the third consecutive day.

The threats, laced with dark, misogynistic messages, claimed to originate from a shadowy group calling themselves “fighters of the Male State.” Without hesitation, airports in Rome and Sofia received urgent alerts, triggering a security response across the continent. A British airport even reported a similar menacing message, linking the threats to the ominous “Men’s State.”

A Chaotic Day in the Skies

As each alert rolled in, the fear of explosives loomed large, particularly affecting low-cost carriers and flights departing or arriving from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Italy.

Three flights had to be diverted, but fortunately, all landed safely. Under strict military escort, Bulgarian air force jets were dispatched to three Ryanair planes traveling from Madrid, Copenhagen, and London to Sofia. Each aircraft was thoroughly inspected. Thankfully, no explosives were found, bringing a collective sigh of relief.

In a dramatic turn, a French fighter jet escorted an Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome, forcing it to land unexpectedly at Evreux military base, around 100 kilometers west of Paris. This drastic measure was taken after the pilot allegedly hesitated to follow the authorities’ orders. While the airline maintained they were cooperating fully with French authorities, the sheer tension of the situation was palpable.

As if that wasn’t enough, a Ryanair flight from London to Sofia had to be diverted to Plovdiv Airport, while a Wizz Air flight headed from Milan to Warsaw was rerouted to Vienna.

An Ominous Message

In a message that sent chills down the spines of many, an email received by Sofia airport stated that “explosive devices” were placed on three Ryanair flights bound for Bulgaria. The sinister warning declared, “You are all accomplices in a criminal conspiracy and for this we want to annihilate you. Today your skies will turn red.” Such disturbing rhetoric aimed directly at undermining the so-called “feminist regime” in Europe, left many bewildered and fearful.

Il Corriere della Sera reported a similar threatening passage directed at flights en route to Rome, amplifying the already tense atmosphere. Birmingham Airport echoed this tension, revealing that it also received a corresponding “hoax” threat from the same group.

Shadows of Extremism

Though the origins of the threat remain murky, experts suggest a potential connection to a far-right movement in Russia known as the Male State, which employs Nazi symbolism and has amassed a troubling following. The group was deemed “extremist” by Russian courts in 2021 but later voiced support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Lou Osborn, founder of the NGO Inpact, remarked on the rising tide of hostility fostered by such groups, hinting at an unsettling alliance between them and powerful entities.

A Broader Impact

While this was a day marked by uncertainty, it’s worth noting that most of the flights touched down without incident. Including a Lot Polish Airlines flight from Warsaw to Brussels and a Wizz Air flight from Milan to Bucharest, the vast majority of air travel operated smoothly despite the chaos.

Even in the Czech Republic, all targeted planes bound for Prague landed safely, while Danish authorities reassured the public that there was no danger posed to passengers or airport personnel.

Travelers’ Reactions

At Rome’s bustling Fiumicino Airport, anxious travelers expressed a mix of concern and caution. “It’s very concerning,” shared Natalia Lobo, a 29-year-old from Brazil. “It’s fearful to be here.” Meanwhile, French traveler Ella Germain reflected, “It’s created a little bit of worry, but I’m trying to stay calm.”

While these incidents stoked anxiety, it’s important to remember that they affected a tiny fraction of Europe’s air traffic on Thursday, with over 25,000 flights scheduled throughout the continent.

A Dark Echo

Earlier this week, similar threats had forced the closure of a Warsaw airport, leading to the deployment of jets to ensure passenger safety. As Europe grapples with these unsettling hoaxes, one can only hope for clarity, protection, and assurance in the air.

In the end, while the sky may be vast and often calming, on this day, it was shrouded in a troubling cloud of fear, uncertainty, and a reminder of the lengths to which some will go to instill terror. The world watches with bated breath, hoping for safety and clarity amidst the storms brewing above.
