Rising Fuel Prices Force Filipinos to Postpone Travel

For many Filipinos, travel isn’t just a luxury.

It’s a reward.
A reunion.
A long-awaited break from everyday life.

But lately… something has changed.

Trips are being delayed.
Plans are being canceled.
And for some, travel is no longer an option.

All because of rising costs.

When Going Home Becomes Too Expensive

One traveler from Manila, originally from the Visayas, had already made plans.

A trip home.
Time with family.
A moment to reconnect.

But she made a difficult decision—

She canceled.

For now, she says, travel will only happen if it’s truly important.

Not for leisure.
Not for fun.

Just when it’s necessary.

And she’s not alone.

Budgets Are Breaking

Another traveler shared a simple truth—

Their budget just can’t keep up.

Flights are more expensive.
Fuel surcharges are rising.
And suddenly, what used to be affordable… isn’t anymore.

Online, many Filipinos are saying the same thing.

Travel has become too costly.

For some, the only “trip” they take now…
Is the daily commute to work.

A Ripple Effect Across the Industry

The slowdown isn’t just felt by travelers.

It’s hitting businesses too.

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association says bookings have dropped sharply.

“Wala kami gaano halos inquiries,” said PTAA president Jaison Yang.

Almost no inquiries.

A clear sign that people are holding back.

Fuel Costs Changing Everything

At the center of it all is one issue—

Fuel.

What used to be a ₱300 surcharge for domestic flights…
Has now jumped to as high as ₱1,600.

And for international travel?

It gets even harder.

Fuel surcharges alone can reach nearly ₱16,000.

That’s before the ticket price.

Before hotels.
Before everything else.

Why Prices Won’t Drop Anytime Soon

The tension in the Middle East continues to affect global oil supply.

And even if things improve—

Prices won’t go down overnight.

“Kahit mag-ceasefire… hindi agad babalik sa normal,” Yang explained.

It may take months.

Maybe longer.

Record-High Charges

To make things tougher, the Civil Aeronautics Board has raised fuel surcharge levels to Level 19—a historic high.

That means:

  • Domestic flights: ₱627 to ₱1,824 extra
  • International flights: ₱2,070 to ₱15,397 extra

For many, that’s the final reason to pause.

Or cancel completely.

Still, Some Hold On to Travel

Despite everything, not all travel has stopped.

Destinations like China, Australia, and New Zealand remain popular.

Because for some—

Travel isn’t just a choice.

It’s something they’ve been saving for… waiting for… dreaming of.

Finding Ways to Cope

The Department of Tourism is now encouraging travelers to look for budget-friendly options.

Cheaper routes.
Flexible dates.
Smarter planning.

Because while travel may be harder now—

It’s not impossible.

A Pause, Not the End

For many Filipinos, this isn’t giving up on travel.

It’s just a pause.

A wait for better days.
For lower prices.
For the moment when they can finally say—

“Now, it’s worth it again.”

Until then…

The journey will have to wait.
