24 Filipinos Evacuated from Hantavirus Ship for Quarantine!

Emotional Journey: The MV Hondius Crew’s Quarantine Flight to Safety

In a heart-wrenching twist of fate, 24 of the 38 Filipino crew members aboard the MV Hondius, facing a hantavirus outbreak, are preparing for a significant journey. They’re set to board a flight to the Netherlands, where they will enter a rigorous six-week quarantine.

Speaking at a virtual press briefing on Sunday evening, Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac shared the unfolding story. Among the 38 crew members, 24 are dedicated hotel staff, known as stewards, while 14 are skilled deck and engine personnel.

A Tough Goodbye

The first group of four stewards will take off soon, followed by 20 more set to leave on Monday. As they prepare to leave the ship, there’s a mix of relief and anxiety in the air. They will soon begin their quarantine, a necessary step for safety, but fraught with uncertainty and concern for their fellow crew members.

The remaining 14 Filipino crew members must stay aboard as the ship sails to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Once the vessel reaches its destination, they too will enter quarantine—bracing themselves for an emotional reunion with their families after this ordeal.

Anchored in Uncertainty

Currently, the MV Hondius is anchored off the coast of Tenerife, Spain. With each passing moment, the crew’s hearts weigh heavy with the knowledge that their lives have been dramatically altered. The ship will undergo thorough disinfection upon arrival, ensuring future voyages are safe.

An Ominous Beginning

This outbreak of hantavirus, usually spread by rodents but, in rare cases, transmitted between humans, was first detected on May 2. This came just 21 days after the first passenger tragically lost their life due to the illness. Since then, two more former passengers have succumbed to this invisible threat.

The luxury cruise ship had embarked on its journey from the picturesque coast of Cape Verde, when the World Health Organization and the European Union urged the country to assist with the evacuation of passengers as the situation escalated. Health officials suspect the initial infection may have occurred before boarding, possibly during prior travels in Argentina or Chile, with the virus subsequently spreading onboard.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel

After their time in quarantine, all 38 crew members will finally be repatriated to their beloved Philippines. As they navigate this challenging journey, the resilience and strength of these Filipino heroes shine brightly. Their experience serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice made by those who serve on the front lines in challenging circumstances.

Through tears and trials, they await the day they can embrace their loved ones once more, and return home safely.
