Abandoned at Sea: 14 Filipino Seafarers Finally Home
In a heartfelt update that brings a sigh of relief, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Monday that all 14 seafarers, who were allegedly abandoned on a cargo vessel in Turkiye, have safely returned to the Philippines.
Imagine the joy and relief as the latest group of nine seafarers stepped off a Turkish Airlines flight at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3. These brave men, who had endured unimaginable conditions, were warmly welcomed back by representatives from the DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
This return marks a significant milestone in their journey. The first five seafarers arrived back on June 22, after facing harrowing challenges aboard the MV Afadja. Picture them living in a ship declared unfit to sail, trapped without electricity, clean water, or enough food. Their situation was dire, compounded by a shipowner who simply “failed to fulfill its obligations.”
But the nightmare has ended. Upon their arrival, the seafarers were not only met with warm greetings but also with vital support. The DMW ensured they received airport assistance, financial aid, temporary hotel accommodations, and transportation to safety.
Moreover, acknowledging the emotional toll this experience has taken, the DMW is referring them to a Department of Health-accredited hospital for psychosocial counseling. They will also receive legal assistance to pursue their claims for unpaid wages and other benefits, ensuring their rights are upheld after such a traumatic ordeal.
The repatriation process was thoughtfully coordinated with the Philippine Embassy in Ankara and the Migrant Workers Office in Lebanon, highlighting the dedication and commitment to bringing our seafarers home safely.
As we celebrate their return, let us remember the strength and resilience of these individuals who faced adversity with unwavering courage. Welcome home, heroes. Your families and the entire nation are grateful for your safe return.
