After spending 46 years in their beloved home in Fort Washington, Maryland, their daughter Vilma Megorden is now their primary caregiver, helping them transition into her home. “It’s been a major change, but we’re all here together,” she explains, noting the challenges that come with caring for elderly parents, especially after Rey’s stroke two years ago, which left him with paralysis on his left side. But don’t let his frail body fool you; Rey’s spirit is resilient. His mind remains sharp, bursting with stories from his days in the U.S. Navy and filled with an unwavering desire to share them.

Rey and Carolina have shared nearly 72 years of marriage, their devotion to each other shining bright. Their four children work diligently to ensure that neither parent spends a moment alone. “Family means everything,” Rey often reflects. His connection to his fellow veterans, though, is still a vital part of his life. Whenever possible, he participates in gatherings with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, fueled by a sense of purpose and a commitment to advocate for Filipino veterans still waiting for promised benefits.
A Life of Service
Rey’s journey didn’t end with military service. After retiring, he worked at the FBI, serving three directors before starting his own barber shop, aptly named The Friendly Barber Shop. Up until 2023, Rey was still cutting hair for members of his community, each snip woven with care and camaraderie.
When asked what it feels like to be the last surviving veteran in the D.C. area, Rey’s answer is a bittersweet mixture of pride and sorrow. “I feel sad,” he admits, reflecting on the 300 men who joined the Navy with him, all of whom have since passed away. “Every year, I lose another shipmate, another friend.” Yet rather than dwell on loss, Rey chooses to stay engaged in life. Even now, he loves preparing simple meals at his VFW meetings, continuing to nurture bonds that transcend the hardships he’s faced.

Faith also plays a big role in Rey’s life. Unable to attend church as he once did, he finds solace in watching Sunday Mass from home, holding onto the spiritual connections that have sustained him throughout his life. Even if age has quieted his worship, it remains profoundly meaningful.
