Thousands Protest Spain’s Response to Deadly Floods

In Valencia, Spain, tens of thousands of people protested on Saturday because they were angry at how the local government handled the terrible floods that happened recently. The floods killed more than 220 people and caused a lot of damage, making it one of the worst natural disasters in Europe in decades.

The protesters were upset because they believe the regional government didn’t warn people about the floods soon enough. They wanted the leader, Carlos Mazon, to resign because they thought he didn’t act quickly enough to protect the people. Some people even threw mud and dirty boots at the government building to show their anger.

Many of the protesters believed the government should have sent out a warning much earlier, and they felt that if they had been told sooner, more people could have been saved. While some towns had already warned people earlier, it wasn’t until later in the evening that the regional government sent out an official warning.

This protest is just one of many after the floods, and while it stayed mostly peaceful, there were a few moments where protesters threw stones at police. The heavy rains caused many people to lose their homes, and nearly 80 people are still missing. The disaster is the deadliest flood in Europe in over 50 years.
