Rona the Explorer: A Teacher’s Journey Across the Philippines
In a heartwarming tale of adventure and inspiration, a 34-year-old teacher from Nueva Ecija has checked off a monumental dream from her bucket list: exploring all 81 provinces of the Philippines, including her beloved home province.
Meet Rona, affectionately known as “Rona the Explorer.” Her incredible journey began in 2015 when she set foot on the enchanting shores of Camiguin in Mindanao. “It was back in 2015 when I visited Camiguin, and it was the first time I saw a white-sand beach,” she recalled with a sparkle in her eyes. “I was amazed!”
From that first encounter with paradise, Rona made a commitment to travel each Christmas and summer break. Her passion for exploration fueled her desire to uncover the hidden treasures of her country, one province at a time.
Fast forward to the summer of 2018—Rona embarked on a month-long backpacking adventure. This wasn’t just any getaway; she journeyed across 16 provinces, from the charming landscapes of Catanduanes to the vibrant culture of Davao. Each step brought new experiences, breathtaking sights, and connections to diverse communities.
Yes, the costs of traveling could be daunting. But Rona knew it was worth every penny. “The experience and the fulfillment of achieving my goal made the journey worthwhile,” she shared with a smile that reflected both satisfaction and joy.
In May, Rona reached the pinnacle of her journey, completing her ambitious quest with Misamis Occidental as her final destination. Her heart swelled with pride as she reflected on her travels. “We can truly be proud of our country. Its culture is very diverse, and there is so much we can learn,” she emphasized. “Traveling is also a form of education.”
Her adventures taught her a powerful lesson: “Life is too short to stay in one place,” she declared. “We have to get out there and explore.”
