Tragedy in Guatemala: Bus Plunge Leaves 50+ Dead

GUATEMALA CITY – A devastating accident in Guatemala City has left the nation in mourning after a packed passenger bus veered off a highway bridge and crashed into a polluted ravine, killing at least 51 people and injuring many others.

A Deadly Fall from Puente Belice

The bus was traveling from San Agustin Acasaguastlan to the capital when, in a tragic turn of events, it plunged 20 meters (65 feet) off Puente Belice, one of the city’s busiest bridges. The fire department rushed to the scene, discovering survivors trapped in the wreckage while bodies lay scattered in the contaminated waters below.

Emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and recover the deceased, taking the bodies of 36 men and 15 women to a temporary morgue.

Horrifying Scene Caught on Camera

Shocking images shared by rescue teams showed the wrecked bus partially submerged in the wastewater, surrounded by victims’ belongings and lifeless bodies. The heartbreaking sight left families and the entire country in shock.

Nation in Mourning

In response to the tragedy, Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning and mobilized the army and disaster response teams to aid in rescue and recovery efforts.

“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up to heartbreaking news. Their pain is my pain,” President Arevalo shared in an emotional message.
