PCG Dispatches Aircraft, Vessels Against 4 Illegal Chinese Ships

Philippine Coast Guard Takes a Stand Against Illegal Maritime Research

In a bold move to safeguard the nation’s waters, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has announced the deployment of aircraft and vessels. This action comes in response to the troubling discovery of four Chinese research ships conducting unauthorized maritime scientific research near Philippine territories.

On a recent Sunday, the PCG shed light on this urgent matter. They revealed that these operations violate the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as the Chinese vessels failed to obtain the necessary legal authority or prior consent from the Philippine government.

The Research Ships in Question

Let’s take a closer look at these four research vessels:

1. Xiangyanghong 33
An advanced oceanographic survey vessel, this ship is equipped for deep-sea research, seafloor mapping, and more. It was spotted approximately 140.47 nautical miles northwest of Rizal, Palawan, near the Quirino Atoll.

2. Shi Yan 1
A specialized SWATH-hulled research vessel, Shi Yan 1 excels in marine science and hydro-acoustics. With its dynamic positioning and advanced sensors, it was located about 118 nautical miles west off Itbayat, Batanes.

3. Jia Geng
This modern deep-sea research ship is outfitted with acoustic sensors and weather radars. Its capabilities extend to deploying unmanned underwater vehicles for comprehensive oceanographic studies. It was seen approximately 88.36 nautical miles northeast off Itbayat, Batanes.

4. Zhuhaiyun
Known as the world’s first intelligent drone mother ship, Zhuhaiyun can operate over 50 unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles simultaneously. It was lying-to about 102.11 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao, Pangasinan.

A Commitment to Protect

The PCG is determined to monitor the movements of these vessels to ensure compliance with Philippine laws and international maritime regulations. PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan stated, “We will not tolerate any illegal marine scientific research conducted without our government’s consent. We are deploying aircraft and vessels to challenge and drive away these unauthorized vessels to protect Philippine sovereignty and sovereign rights.”

In these times of tension, the PCG stands resolute. Their mission is clear: to protect the nation’s waters and assert its rights against any encroachment. As they deploy their resources, one thing is certain—Philippine sovereignty remains a priority, and the watchful eyes of the Coast Guard will not waver.

Stay tuned as this story unfolds, and support the efforts to secure our beloved maritime territories.
