Michael V. Shines Spotlight on Filipino Language in New Parody

Michael V., or Bitoy, is back with another hilarious and meaningful parody song called “Hilaw.” This time, he’s putting the spotlight on something close to his heart—using the Filipino language properly, especially in songwriting.

In a recent 24 Oras report, Bitoy shared his concern about how some songs today don’t reflect the true art of songwriting. “The structure of songwriting has been neglected,” he said. He emphasized the importance of correct syllables, grammar, and rhythm when crafting lyrics in Filipino.

Through “Hilaw,” Bitoy also hopes to remind everyone about their Filipino lessons from school. “We just want to create awareness so people will recall their Filipino lessons and maybe even share them with their kids or friends,” he explained.

In the parody, Bitoy transforms into Yaki, a comedic take on rising OPM star Maki. Performed aboard a garbage truck, “Hilaw” pokes fun at people who mix improper Filipino with a conyo accent.

Maki, the inspiration for the spoof, wasn’t offended. Instead, he felt honored. He even reposted Bitoy’s parody on X (formerly Twitter), jokingly asking what shade of lipstick Bitoy used. Bitoy gamely replied, promising to send Maki some as a Christmas gift.

Bitoy shared how he relates to Maki, saying, “He reminds me of my younger self, especially with the poses he does.”

This is just one of Michael V.’s many parodies. He has recently spoofed hits like “Raining in Manila” by Lola Amour, “Uhaw” by Dilaw, and “Pasilyo” by SunKissed Lola.

As for Maki, he continues to rise as an OPM star, even performing his hit song “Dilaw” alongside American band LANY at the Philippine Arena in October.

Bitoy’s parody not only entertains but also inspires a deeper appreciation for Filipino culture and language—proving comedy can also educate!
