Jay Sonza Arrest: Govt’s Move to Protect the Truth!

Government Takes a Stand Against Online Fake News: The Case of Jay Sonza

In a significant move this past Friday, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced the arrest of former TV host Jay Sonza by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). This action underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to combat online abuse and the dangerous spread of fake news.

The arrest took place on Thursday night in Quezon City, following allegations that Sonza had disseminated false information regarding the health of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. This isn’t just a random crackdown; it’s a reflection of a larger mission to protect the truth and ensure that the public is shielded from deception.

PCO Acting Secretary Dave Gomez articulated this sentiment in a heartfelt statement, expressing that this incident highlights the government’s diligent efforts to “guard the truth, protect the public from deception, and preserve a free but responsible democratic space.” It’s a reminder that while we cherish freedom of speech, it is equally essential to approach our responsibility to communicate with care and accuracy.

Gomez also shared a stern warning for those peddling fake news: the consequences will be swift and lawful. He emphasized that the PCO’s Oplan Kontra Fake News campaign will continue to collaborate with law enforcement, media, and responsible online platforms to track down and prosecute those spreading falsehoods. Because in this digital age, accountability is more critical than ever.

The NBI Cybercrime Division had been busy gathering evidence since January 2026, identifying Sonza among those spreading “unverified and misleading medical information” about the President. Even though the original posts have since been deleted or restricted, the NBI employed advanced digital forensic methods to safeguard crucial evidence, including authenticated screenshots and the tracking of reposted content.

Following this meticulous investigation, the Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Sonza. He now faces serious charges, including unlawful use of means of publication and unlawful utterances under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code. These charges are in connection with Republic Act 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Meanwhile, Sonza’s camp has expressed their intention to challenge the issuance of a non-bailable warrant, arguing that it’s excessive for what they consider a minor offense.

In today’s ever-evolving digital landscape, this situation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of truth and accountability. As we navigate through a sea of information, let’s remember that our words hold weight. It’s up to each of us to ensure that what we share is not only accurate but also responsible.

In the fight against fake news, the message is clear: Deception will not stand, and the truth will always find a way to shine through.
