House Probes Shocking Mix-Up in OFW Repatriation

The Wrong Body Sent Home? 💔 The heartbreaking ordeal of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), Jenny Alvarado, has left her family devastated, prompting lawmakers to call for a House investigation into the shocking mishandling of her remains.

What Happened?

Jenny Alvarado, a domestic worker in Kuwait for over 8 years, tragically died of coal suffocation on January 2, along with two other workers from Sri Lanka and Nepal. Her employer informed her family on January 3 that her repatriation would be delayed due to an autopsy.

By January 10, authorities confirmed that Jenny’s remains were finally arriving in the Philippines. Her grieving family, including her five children, gathered at a funeral home in Cavite to welcome her home one last time.

But when they opened the casket… it wasn’t Jenny inside.

A Devastating Discovery

As the casket lid was lifted, Jenny’s children screamed in horror:

“That’s not our mother!” 😢

Instead of Jenny, the family found the body of a complete stranger—a moment that left them in shock, confusion, and unbearable grief.

Government’s Failure to Explain

Despite the obvious mix-up, officials from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) failed to give an immediate explanation to Jenny’s family. The incident raised serious concerns about how OFW deaths are handled and whether proper procedures are in place.

Jenny’s actual remains only arrived six days later, on January 16. But even more disturbing—her family later learned that there was no autopsy done in Kuwait, despite what her employer had claimed. Instead, they found bruises on her back and knees, raising suspicion about the real cause of her death.

Lawmakers Demand Justice

Outraged by the neglect and mismanagement, House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro, House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas, and Rep. Raoul Manuel filed House Resolution 2213, demanding a full-blown investigation into the incident.

They emphasized that the DMW and OWWA must be held accountable for:
❌ Failing to properly identify Jenny’s body before repatriation
❌ The mishandling of OFW deaths and lack of clear communication with grieving families
❌ The suspicious circumstances surrounding Jenny’s death

What’s Next?

The lawmakers have called on the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs to investigate the case, ensure better handling of OFW repatriations, and hold those responsible accountable.

Jenny Alvarado was finally laid to rest on January 26, but her family’s search for answers is far from over. 💔 Will justice be served? Stay tuned.
