From Love for Dogs to International Screenings: The Heartfelt Journey of ‘RUNO!’
What started as a simple love for dogs has blossomed into a remarkable journey for two talented Filipino animation students, Lysa Catolico and Jazmine Gin Pateña. Their heartfelt 2D animated short film, “RUNO!”, is set to screen at the prestigious 2026 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF). For these young filmmakers, this achievement feels like a dream come true.
In a recent episode of GMA Pinoy TV’s Sparks of Joy, Lysa shared the spark that ignited this creative endeavor. “It all began with my passion for dogs,” she said, her eyes lighting up. “I was looking for someone who shared my vision, and that’s when I found Jazmine.”
Jazmine chimed in, recalling how the decision to feature a dog as the film’s protagonist felt instinctive. “Dogs truly embody unconditional love,” she explained, a warm smile spreading across her face. This sentiment became the very essence of RUNO!—a story that reflects the beauty of true companionship.
But it wasn’t just the animation that mattered to these filmmakers. Jazmine emphasized the importance of storytelling. “You can have stunning visuals, but if the story doesn’t connect, it all falls flat,” she remarked thoughtfully.
As they reminisced about the film’s evolution, Lysa noted, “RUNO! started back in 2024, and believe me, it was a completely different concept back then.” The film took shape through collaboration, teamwork, and the invaluable support of friends and mentors who believed in their vision.
Receiving the invitation to screen RUNO! at LAAPFF felt surreal for both Lysa and Jazmine. “Can you believe it? We actually got into the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival!” Lysa exclaimed, still amazed by their accomplishment.
While RUNO! opens doors on an international platform, the duo is already turning their sights to future projects. “We have our own films we want to direct,” Lysa shared excitedly. “This experience has ignited our passion to tell stories that celebrate Filipino identity.”
She continued, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to direct RUNO!. “It’s a rare chance to tell a story that resonates with who we are, and I’m hopeful that more Filipino narratives will reach global audiences,” she said, her passion evident in every word.
Jazmine, too, expressed a desire for their journey to serve as inspiration for others. “It’s about giving back. I want to instill joy not just for Filipinos everywhere but also for aspiring artists and dreamers,” she said, her voice filled with hope.
