Homeward Bound: The Safe Return of Four Filipino Seafarers
On a bright July 29, a hopeful story unfolded at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Manila. Four Filipino seafarers, who had endured weeks of uncertainty and danger far from home, finally set foot on familiar ground after their repatriation from Iran.
These brave men had been working in the gas fields along the coasts of Bushehr and Kish Island. However, their situation took a perilous turn due to escalating military conflicts in the southern regions of Iran. With their safety at risk, their plight was brought to the attention of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, who acted swiftly and tirelessly to ensure their safe return.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) shared that these seafarers were employed by an Iranian company and faced increasingly dangerous conditions. Understanding the urgency, the embassy coordinated closely with the concerned Iranian authorities to arrange for their repatriation. The efforts were in alignment with the Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) regulations of the DFA, showcasing the commitment to protect citizens abroad.
Their journey back to safety began when they disembarked on July 14 and were temporarily housed in Bushehr. But the road home was not yet complete. On July 27, they traveled by land to Shiraz, where the Philippine Embassy made arrangements for their flight to Tehran.
Finally, upon arriving at Imam Khomeini International Airport, they were greeted by welcoming faces: Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General Jabbar Adiong, along with ATN Officer and Attaché Eunice Tabitha Trinidad-Tumampos.
