Tragedy Strikes: Filipino Among Victims in Drone Attack in Saudi Arabia
In a heart-wrenching incident reported by Reuters, a Filipino national lost his life in a drone attack targeting an oilfield facility in Saudi Arabia. The event unfolded at the Shaybah oilfield, operated by Saudi Aramco, where the country’s air defenses successfully intercepted the drone before it could reach its intended target. Sadly, the aftermath was devastating: two residents, including our Filipino compatriot, and a Nepali, were confirmed dead, while two others—one from Pakistan and another from India—sustained injuries from debris falling after the interception.
The attack ignited a fire in a vehicle outside the facility’s perimeter, but thankfully, operations at the oilfield remained unaffected. The energy ministry assured the public of this through its official channels. Yet, this incident is not just a moment of chaos; it’s a reflection of the escalating tensions in the region, particularly amid increasing missile strikes led by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi rebels against the kingdom.
On October 10, a similar wave of violence shook Riyadh, leaving at least 12 people dead and over 300 injured. The chaos of that day reverberates through the lives of many, forever altering their realities.
In light of the tragedy, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that one of the injured Filipinos is showing signs of improvement. Meanwhile, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has been in communication with Saudi authorities to gather more information. Administrator PY Caunan expressed their commitment to supporting the affected families.
“Nakatanggap ang Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) ng mga ulat hinggil sa pagkasawi umano ng isang Pilipino sa isang pag-atake sa Saudi Arabia,” she stated. (The OWWA has received reports about the alleged death of a Filipino in an attack in Saudi Arabia.) The agency is currently awaiting formal confirmation from Saudi authorities and company representatives, ensuring they handle this sensitive situation with the utmost care and respect for the grieving families.
“Ipinapangako ng OWWA na handa kaming magbigay ng nararapat na tulong at suporta sa pamilya,” Caunan reassured. (The OWWA promises that we are ready to provide appropriate assistance and support to the family.) They are also coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh to help repatriate around 300 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the wake of the turmoil.
Through these harrowing times, the Philippines stands firmly in solidarity with Saudi Arabia, pledging to protect its nationals and residents—nearly one million Filipinos living and working in the Middle Eastern nation.
As we reflect on this tragic event, our hearts go out to the families impacted. It’s a grim reminder of the risks faced by many overseas workers and the fragility of peace in tumultuous regions. We hold onto hope that the authorities will bring about stability and safety for all.
