Elephant vs. Hunter: California Man Killed in Central Africa

Tragic Encounter: California Hunter Killed by Elephant in Gabon

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 75-year-old big-game hunter from California, Ernie Dosio, lost his life during a hunting expedition in the lush forests of Gabon, Central Africa. It was April 17 when Dosio, accompanied by two fellow hunters, ventured into the Lope-Okanda rainforest, a thriving habitat teeming with wildlife.

They were on a mission to track a rare species of forest-dwelling antelope when their journey took a tragic twist. Reports indicate that while navigating this verdant paradise, they stumbled upon a small herd of female elephants with their young calves. Alarmed yet intrigued, the group decided to back off, hoping to avoid any confrontation with these majestic creatures.

But nature had other plans. As the hunters retreated, the elephants charged—not out of aggression, but to protect their young. The tension mounted as the animals became more aware of the humans in their territory. In a matter of moments, the situation escalated dangerously. While the hunting party attempted to move away, one of the elephants grew increasingly aggressive, charging toward them.

In a frantic attempt to save his friend, one of Dosio’s companions tried to pull him to safety behind a nearby tree. Tragically, it was too late. The elephant attacked again, fatally goring Dosio with her tusk, leaving the hunting party in shock and sorrow.

Dax McCarty, a close friend of Dosio, shared the grim details with the press, speaking on behalf of Dosio’s family, who had permitted him to discuss the events. “It all happened so quickly,” McCarty lamented. “Their courage turned to terror in just an instant.”

The professional hunter guiding the group also suffered severe injuries during this chaotic encounter. The safari operator, Collect Africa, confirmed the harrowing details and expressed their condolences for the loss of their client.

Dosio, known for his wealth and reputation as an experienced big-game hunter, was not just a sportsman but also a millionaire owner of a farm management company that specialized in working with wineries. His passion for adventure and wildlife led him to the heart of Gabon, a land celebrated for its breathtaking biodiversity. The forests here are not only home to elephants but also to wondrous creatures like gorillas and chimpanzees. Gabon, often referred to as the last stronghold for forest elephants in Central Africa, boasts lush landscapes that draw wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe.

As the world mourns the tragic loss of Ernie Dosio, his remains now await repatriation, a stark reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous beauty of nature. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between humans and wildlife, highlighting the unpredictable power of the natural world.
