Popular doctor and heart expert Willie Ong announced that he will no longer run for senator in the 2025 elections. His reason? He wants to focus on getting better because of his health condition.
Ong’s Big Decision
On Thursday, Ong shared the news on his Facebook page, saying:
“I am officially withdrawing my candidacy for the 2025 elections so I can focus more on taking care of my health.”
Even though he won’t be running anymore, Doc Willie promised that he will still support leaders who share his dream of helping Filipinos, especially the poor.
“Our advocacy to help the poor Filipinos continues even in my private capacity,” he added.
He also thanked everyone who supported and prayed for him during this tough time.
Ong’s Battle with Cancer
Back in September 2023, Doc Willie revealed that doctors found a large tumor (16 x 13 x 12 cm) in his abdomen. This tumor, called a sarcoma, was hiding behind his heart and in front of his spine.
At that time, he was already undergoing treatment in Singapore. Even though he was sick, he still decided to run for senator, and his wife, Dr. Liza Ong, filed his certificate of candidacy for him.
Reactions to His Withdrawal
Former Senator Bam Aquino, who is running in the 2025 elections, praised Ong’s dedication to the country.
“It is with deep respect that I acknowledge the difficult decision of Doc Willie Ong to withdraw his candidacy for the Senate so he can focus on his health recovery. Maraming salamat, Doc Willie, sa iyong malasakit at pagmamahal sa bayan.”
Aquino also wished Doc Willie a fast recovery and strength for his family.
Ong’s Political Journey
Doc Willie previously ran for vice president in 2022 but did not win. In the latest Pulse Asia poll (February 10, 2024), he ranked 19th to 21st among those running for senator.
