Filipino Teacher in Arizona Named Teacher of the Year!

Celebrating a Filipino Educator: John Francis Saavedra, Teacher of the Year

In a heartwarming achievement, John Francis Saavedra, a dedicated Filipino teacher in Glendale, Arizona, has been honored as Arizona Teacher of the Year within the Legacy Traditional Schools network. This accolade, announced on May 6, 2026, marks not only a personal triumph but an embodiment of the values instilled in him during his upbringing in the Philippines.

John’s journey began in the Philippines, where he learned that education is more than just academics—it’s a gateway to opportunities. “Education back home is seen as a pathway to opportunity, often made possible through sacrifice,” he reflected. For John, every lesson he absorbed shaped his character and purpose, and one teacher in particular—his sixth-grade mentor, Mrs. Laxamana—had an indelible impact on his life.

Though he didn’t always shine in grades, she saw potential in him that he struggled to recognize. “Because she believed in me, I began to believe in myself,” he shared. This transformative experience now guides his own teaching, inspiring him to uplift and empower his students.

Now, with 18 years of teaching under his belt, John specializes in secondary English, focusing on reading and writing. He promotes student voice and confidence through TED-style talks, emphasizing that education is not just about grades. “Students may forget lessons or assignments, but they will remember how a teacher made them feel,” he remarked, highlighting the profound emotional connection that lies at the heart of teaching.

As the only Filipino educator in his school—and likely throughout the entire Legacy network—John carries the weight of representation. “For many students, I may be the first Filipino teacher they’ve encountered,” he said, passionately conveying the importance of visibility. He wants his students to know that success comes in many forms, faces, and stories.

Integrating Filipino values like paggalang (respect), malasakit (compassion), tatag (resilience), and bayanihan (community spirit) into his teaching, John nurtures a classroom atmosphere where every student feels valued and supported. These principles resonate deeply, especially for those grappling with their identities or personal challenges.

However, the path hasn’t always been smooth. John candidly recalls the hurdles he faced early in his teaching career, including overcoming biases tied to race and accent. “There were moments when I had to work harder to prove my credibility,” he admitted, but he chose to turn these challenges into strengths.

Despite his latest achievement, John remains humble, motivated by a mission that transcends accolades. “I have never worked for awards,” he stated. “My greatest purpose has always been making a difference in students’ lives.”

As he pursues a doctorate in Adult Education, John envisions himself mentoring future educators, creating ripples of positive influence in the teaching landscape. Mid-year, he plans a trip back to the Philippines to reconnect with Mrs. Laxamana, a beautiful homage to the teacher who made such a difference in his life. “Life has a way of coming full circle,” he mused.

Outside the classroom, John is deeply engaged in the Filipino community in Arizona. He has initiated awards recognizing Filipino-American achievers and has previously led an association to support Filipino teachers. He has a simple yet powerful message for aspiring young educators: “Your story, your culture, your struggles, those are not weaknesses. They are the foundation of your strength.”

Today, thousands of miles from his beginnings, John Francis Saavedra continues to inspire, embodying the very essence of what it means to teach with love, dedication, and the recognition that every student has the potential to shine. Through his work, he’s not just transforming lives but also paving the way for others to follow.

In a world that often highlights competition, his journey serves as a reminder: true success comes from nurturing others, embracing our stories, and building a community where everyone can thrive.
