Marcos’ Reaction to Sara Duterte’s ‘Kill’ Remark in Trial

Tension in the Senate: A Dramatic Impeachment Trial

On Tuesday, the Senate impeachment court was a whirlpool of emotions as the House prosecution team unveiled a shocking video. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was seen reacting to a troubling claim made by Vice President Sara Duterte: that she had supposedly contracted an assassin to eliminate him.

This was just the second day of Duterte’s impeachment trial, and tensions were high.

A Call to Attention

Atty. Amando Virgil Ligutan, the prosecutor’s counsel, took center stage and called witness John Mark Calilung, a senior agent from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). He was tasked with shedding light on the response from various government agencies to a virtual media conference where Duterte allegedly threatened the lives of President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Calilung revealed that several key agencies had reacted to this alarming conference. “The Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, the National Security Council, and the Presidential Communications Office all took notice,” he stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Proof and Authentication

As if the atmosphere couldn’t get any more charged, Calilung then mentioned that he had personally authenticated the video of President Marcos’s reaction, which had been posted on the official website of the Presidential Communications Office.

“I took a screenshot of the President’s statement from the website. I also have a video recording, which I authenticated,” he shared. His voice was steady, but the weight of the moment was palpable. He even provided a flash drive containing the video statement of Marcos, which was played during the trial, immersing everyone in the tension of the moment.

Marcos’s Strong Words

In the video from November 2024, President Marcos appeared resolute as he addressed the unsettling comment made by Duterte. He vowed to take action, saying, “If it’s that easy to plan the assassination of a President, what more about ordinary citizens?” His words resonated deeply in the courtroom, sparking intense emotions among those present.

“Such a criminal attempt should not be overlooked. I will not let that slide,” he insisted, though he never mentioned Duterte by name, making it all the more clear whom he was addressing.

The Stakes Are High

Calilung is the prosecution’s first witness, highlighting the seriousness of the impeachment article, which details a grave threat and potential assassination plot against the President and his family. Meanwhile, the defense team argued that Duterte was merely exercising her freedom of expression when making her statement.

As the trial unfolds, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With each revelation, the atmosphere grows thicker, filled with uncertainty and gravity. The nation holds its breath, waiting to see how this dramatic saga will play out.

In this courtroom, emotions run high, and the implications of every word are profound. Stay tuned as we navigate through these turbulent waters together.
