Erwin Tulfo Urges DTI to Check Retailers for Price Violations

Erwin Tulfo Calls for Action Against Price Freeze Violations

On Sunday, Erwin Tulfo, a passionate advocate for the public, urged the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to take immediate action. His message? Inspect retailers who are allegedly violating the crucial price freeze on basic commodities. “Heed the call of our kababayans,” Tulfo expressed, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

He pointed out that a quick glance at social media reveals a growing sentiment—people in various areas are not benefiting from the price freeze. This freeze, which is in place for essential goods, was meant to provide relief amid escalating prices, but it seems that not everyone is following the rules.

The DTI has implemented this price freeze on basic necessities and prime commodities until May 10, following agreements made with manufacturers and retailers. They assure the public that there won’t be any supply shortages in the coming weeks. Yet, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

What exactly does this price freeze cover? It includes essential items that families rely on every day—foods that are critical for survival, especially during tough times. Under Republic Act No. 7581, known as the Price Act, basic necessities consist of items like bread, canned fish, potable water, processed milk, and locally manufactured noodles.

Prime commodities, while not as critical for survival, are still essential for everyday living. Think of flour, processed meats, vinegar, fish sauce, and toilet soap—items that play a fundamental role in our daily routines.

The stakes are high for those who choose to disregard these regulations. Violating the price ceiling set by the Price Act can lead to serious consequences, including imprisonment for one to ten years or fines ranging from P5,000 to a staggering P1 million.

Tulfo’s call to action is not just a request—it’s a plea for accountability. It’s about protecting our communities and ensuring that everyone can access the basic goods they need without being taken advantage of.

Now more than ever, we must rally together and stand up for one another. The power of social media can amplify our voices, but it takes action from authorities to make a real difference. Let’s hope the DTI listens and stands strong against any violations, ensuring that every Filipino can afford the essential items they desperately need.
