Envisioning the Future: The Department of Education’s Bold Plan for SY 2026-2027
As the summer days draw to a close, there’s a palpable excitement in the air, especially within the realm of education. The Department of Education (DepEd) is gearing up for a significant milestone: the School Year (SY) 2026-2027, set to kick off on June 8. This year, they anticipate an incredible influx of students—between 26 million and 28 million eager minds ready to learn.
Assistant Secretary Jocelyn Andaya shared these insights during a heartfelt interview on Super Radyo dzBB. She assured the public that with over a million teachers and non-teaching staff, our public elementary and secondary schools are well-prepared for this anticipated surge.
“We have many new positions created,” Andaya expressed, her voice filled with hope. “We believe we’ll have enough teachers available for this school year. However, if we look at the ideal scenario, we do still face a slight shortage in certain areas. But let’s not forget, there are schools where teacher numbers are more than sufficient.”
A Balancing Act: Teacher-Student Ratios
With the looming increase in student numbers, Andaya emphasized the importance of maintaining quality education. Currently, the student-to-teacher ratio stands at about 35:1 in elementary schools and 45:1 in junior high. However, urban areas like the bustling National Capital Region may see this figure rise to between 50:1 and 55:1. It’s a challenging balance to strike, especially in crowded cities where every classroom matters.
Despite these hurdles, Andaya remains optimistic. “We’re actively working to address the classroom backlog, which currently sits at 136,000,” she revealed. “We have a variety of ways to speed up classroom construction, including public-private partnerships and collaborations with local government units, as well as our Adopt-a-School initiative.”
This commitment to improving infrastructure is heartening. Andaya highlighted that this year alone, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is expected to complete over 9,000 new classrooms. “This includes both new projects and those that have been carried over from previous years,” she noted proudly.
A Focus on Learning Resources
In addition to addressing physical needs, Andaya turned her attention to learning materials. While some textbooks were delivered last year, not all are in students’ hands just yet. But fear not! “We are expediting our procurement for new textbooks,” she reassured, “and in the meantime, we have supplementary materials and lesson activity sheets available for our students.”
This compassionate approach ensures that while new textbooks are on the way—with deliveries expected in July—students won’t miss out on the learning they deserve.
As we embark on this exciting journey towards SY 2026-2027, the vision painted by DepEd is not just about numbers—it’s about fostering dreams, nurturing minds, and shaping futures. Though challenges abound, the Department’s commitment shines through, ensuring that every child receives the education they need and deserve.
As we move forward, let’s keep our hearts and minds open, embracing the promise of a brighter tomorrow for every Filipino student. The adventure in education continues, and we’re all part of this beautiful story.
