Respect Local Laws and Communities, Urges Amb. Kursh

Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Addresses Concerns Over Tourist Misconduct in Siargao

In a heartfelt virtual meeting that resonated throughout the beautiful shores of Siargao, Ambassador Dana Kursh of Israel addressed a growing unease among local communities regarding the behavior of some Israeli tourists. “We expect all Israeli citizens to respect local laws, regulations, and the communities they visit,” she emphasized, a sentiment echoing with urgency and compassion.

A Call for Respect

During her dialogue with over 70 Siargao business owners, Kursh laid down the embassy’s firm stance against any behavior that disrespects local customs. “We do not condone such actions,” she asserted, ensuring the local community that they have the embassy’s support as they navigate these troubling incidents.

Kursh’s commitment didn’t stop there. She revealed ongoing discussions with local stakeholders, acknowledging a flurry of public discourse—and concern—expressed widely on social media platforms about the behavior of some visitors from Israel. “If there are misbehaving Israeli citizens, they should be arrested,” she affirmed. Belle Diesta, a resident of General Luna who participated in the meeting, noted the urgency in Kursh’s voice when she described how they were coordinating closely with local authorities to address these growing concerns.

Local Authorities in Charge

However, Kursh made it clear that the embassy’s power was limited. “This is within the scope of the Philippine National Police,” she said, emphasizing that they would not interfere in local law enforcement. Diesta echoed this sentiment of reliance on local governance, reflecting a hope that proper measures would be taken to restore harmony to their beloved community.

A Personal Visit to Siargao

The virtual meeting followed a canceled in-person visit Kursh had planned to General Luna, where she had intended to meet more closely with the local business community. Despite the change in plans, she was able to engage with local officials, including Mayor Johnson Y. Sajulga and Vice Mayor Dr. Romina Rusillon-Sajulga. Kursh expressed her deep affection for Siargao, stating, “We care about Siargao, its people, its future, and its reputation as a world-class tourism and surfing destination.”

Rising Tensions Post-Conflict

The urgency of the situation heightened after the recent conflict in the Middle East, which, as Diesta noted, seemed to correlate with a rise in troubling incidents involving Israeli tourists. “We’ve noticed daily minor aggressions,” she shared, her voice tinged with emotion. She described confrontations, from fistfights to complaints about non-payment for meals, painting a picture of rising anxiety within the local community.

In a candid interview, Kursh recognized the gravity of the situation, stating, “If nobody presses charges, we cannot do anything about it.” With a firm resolve, she encouraged residents to report incidents, reiterating the importance of legal accountability.

A Message to Visitors

Understanding the importance of education, she pledged to create a video in Hebrew to remind future Israeli tourists of their responsibilities and the necessity of respect for local laws. “Our message is clear: behave, respect the laws of the land, and be accountable for your actions,” she urged.

Earlier, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reinforced this message, welcoming all tourists but emphasizing the importance of respect and dignity. “You are welcome in the Philippines. Be a good guest, honor the Filipino people, and they will honor you back even more,” they stated emphatically.

A Community’s Voice

Yet, amidst these affirmative messages, Diesta raised a poignant concern. “How many individual incidents does it take before it becomes a serious issue?” she questioned, her worry palpable. Each plea for calm from the community seems to coincide with further incidents, creating an unsettling cycle that feels difficult to break.

Kursh, expressing gratitude to the community for raising their concerns, reassured them of her commitment: “I will do everything in my power to make sure these incidents do not happen again.”

In a closing statement, the Israeli Embassy reiterated the importance of legitimate incident reporting through the proper channels to uphold justice. They urged hope that the broader international narrative does not overshadow Siargao’s reality as a peaceful, welcoming destination.

Moving Forward Together

As the sun sets over the tranquil waters of Siargao, the hopes of its community rest not only on diplomacy but also on the understanding and respect of its visitors. Everyone longs for a peaceful coexistence, where cultural exchange flourishes, and mutual respect reigns supreme. In this shared dream, both locals and visitors can cherish the beauty that this island brings to life.
