Journey Home: The Resilience of the MV Hondius Crew
As of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, a heartfelt reunion unfolded in the Netherlands. Twenty-one brave crew members from the MV Hondius finally touched down on Dutch soil, ready to embark on the next chapter of their journey home. The warmth of this moment was palpable, thanks in part to the dedication of the Philippine Embassy, led by Ambassador J. Eduardo Malaya.
Each arrival at Eindhoven Airport was met with smiles, relief, and gratitude. Among the 17 Filipino crew members—six of whom were women—emotions ran high as they were welcomed by Dutch health and foreign ministry officials. This moment marked the second batch of evacuations for the crew impacted by the hantavirus outbreak while on board the MV Hondius, a vessel that had been in Tenerife, in Spain’s beautiful Canary Islands.
The previous Sunday had already seen the beginning of this crucial operation, with four crew members arriving safely in Eindhoven. It was a cautiously orchestrated effort, taking place under strict health protocols to ensure everyone’s safety in the face of a public health emergency.
Accompanying Ambassador Malaya at the airport were Consul Kay Kalaw-Ado, Attaché Kieren Roevi Batiles, and staff member Joel Aballe, all of whom were integral to this mission of mercy. Their presence represented not just official duty but a shared commitment to the welfare of their countrymen.
Upon disembarking, the new arrivals were immediately subjected to medical tests—a step deemed vital as they transitioned into local quarantine facilities, awaiting the next leg of their repatriation journey to the Philippines. The Philippine Embassy in The Hague expressed deep gratitude for the proactive measures taken by the Dutch government, thanking them for their diligent attention to public health during this crisis. It also emphasized ongoing collaboration with local authorities and Migrant Workers Offices in Berlin to ensure the smooth repatriation of all 38 Filipino crew members.
