124 Journalists Killed – Why 2024 Was the Deadliest Year Yet

The year 2024 was the most dangerous year for journalists in modern history, with at least 124 reporters losing their lives, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Why Were So Many Journalists Killed?

The CPJ says this sharp rise in killings—a 22% increase from 2023—is because of growing wars, political chaos, and rising crime worldwide.

“Today is the most dangerous time to be a journalist in CPJ’s history,” said Jodie Ginsberg, CPJ’s CEO.

Who Was Responsible for the Most Deaths?

📌 85 journalists died in the Israel-Hamas war—all of them at the hands of the Israeli military, with 82 of them being Palestinian journalists. This made it the deadliest conflict for reporters.

📌 Sudan and Pakistan each recorded six journalist deaths, ranking second.

📌 Mexico—long known as one of the most dangerous places for reporters—saw five journalists killed due to weak protection systems.

📌 Haiti saw two reporters murdered, with gangs openly claiming responsibility.

📌 Other journalists were killed in Myanmar, Mozambique, India, Iraq, and more.

Who Is Most at Risk?

One of the most vulnerable groups is freelance journalists—those who work independently and don’t have big news companies protecting them. CPJ reports that 43 freelancers were killed in 2024.

What About 2025?

Sadly, this year isn’t looking any better—with six journalists already killed in just the first weeks of 2025.

With wars and conflicts rising, journalists are facing more dangers than ever—just for reporting the truth. 🕊️📢
