Prague, Czech Republic — On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that peace is still possible in the war between Ukraine and Russia — and it could even start today if the world helps out.
President Zelenskiy stood beside Czech Republic’s President Petr Pavel at a news conference and shared his hopes that the fighting, which has been going on for more than three years, could finally take a break — and that break is called a ceasefire.
🕊️ What Is a Ceasefire?
A ceasefire is when countries that are fighting agree to stop the fighting for a while. It doesn’t mean the war is over, but it gives everyone time to talk, help people who are hurt, and find ways to bring real peace.
💬 Zelenskiy’s Message: “We Can Stop the War… Even Today!”
President Zelenskiy said that Ukraine is ready to stop the fighting if Russia agrees too. He shared:
“We believe that a ceasefire is possible at any moment, even starting today. It should last at least 30 days to give peace a chance.”
But he also warned that Russia won’t stop the war unless the world puts more pressure on them. That means countries around the world need to stand together, speak up, and make it clear that the war should end.
🕯️ A Short Pause From Russia, But Not Enough
Russian President Vladimir Putin said there would be a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 10 to remember the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. But Zelenskiy said that wasn’t enough. He wants a real and unconditional ceasefire that lasts 30 days—not just a few days for show.
🤝 Czech Republic Supports Ukraine
The Czech Republic has been helping Ukraine a lot. They’ve been working hard to find and send large bullets (called “ammunition”) for Ukraine to use in defending itself. In fact:
-
They helped send 1.6 million bullets to Ukraine last year.
-
In 2025, Ukraine hopes to receive 1.8 million more under this program.
President Zelenskiy thanked the Czech government and called the plan “effective,” meaning it’s really working!
💥 What Else Does Ukraine Need?
President Zelenskiy said that to stop the war and protect innocent people, three things are needed:
-
More sanctions (These are rules to punish Russia, like stopping trade or freezing money).
-
Continued support from other countries.
-
Stronger teamwork in Europe’s defenses, especially military cooperation.
He also said that instead of showing off tanks in parades, Russia should focus on how to end the war.
🛑 Who Can Stop the War Right Now?
President Pavel of the Czech Republic said something really important:
“If anyone can stop this war with just one decision, it’s President Putin of Russia.”
But, sadly, President Putin hasn’t shown that he wants to stop yet.
✈️ More Help from Other Countries
Ukraine is also working with other countries to train pilots, improve their air defense systems, and get support for their new F-16 fighter jets—fast and powerful planes that can help defend the country.
🇺🇸 A Chat with Former U.S. President
Zelenskiy also talked to former U.S. President Donald Trump on April 26 at the Vatican, during the funeral of Pope Francis. They agreed that a 30-day ceasefire would be a good first step toward ending the war for good.
💑 Who’s Traveling with Zelenskiy?
President Zelenskiy was not alone—his wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, is with him during this trip. On Monday, he is set to meet Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, where they will talk more about helping Ukraine.
💙 A Hope for Peace
Even though the war has been long and painful, President Zelenskiy believes peace is still possible. But it will only happen if more countries speak up, help out, and push for it to happen.
As Zelenskiy said—peace can start even today. And wouldn’t that be something the whole world could celebrate?
