Yellow Alert for the Visayas Power Grid: What You Need to Know
Heads up, everyone! This Saturday afternoon, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Visayas power grid will be under a yellow alert. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has announced this due to lower power reserves caused by the unavailability of several key power plants.
But what does this mean for you?
Right now, the Visayas grid is operating at a capacity of 2,487 megawatts (MW) while facing a peak demand of 2,337 MW. So, while we have enough power for the moment, we’re not in the clear yet.
Why the Yellow Alert?
There are a few reasons for this alert:
– Coal Plant Troubles: Two of our large coal plants, TVI 1 and TVI 2, are currently offline, which has put extra strain on our grid.
– Limited Power Supply: We’re also dealing with limited power imports from Mindanao, primarily due to maintenance work at GNPK 2.
In fact, it’s not just a one-off issue. The NGCP reported that over the past few months, there have been ongoing outages. As of August 2026, eight plants are on forced outages. To break it down:
– One has been down since July.
– Three have been out since June.
– The outages go back even further, with some plants offline since as far back as 2021.
Additionally, 13 other plants are running at reduced capacity. All of these issues have led to a total of 821.5 MW being unavailable for us in the Visayas region.
What Does a Yellow Alert Mean?
A yellow alert signifies that the power supply is no longer in a comfortable safety zone. While we’re still able to meet current demands, the margins are slim. When we’re operating in this zone, the chances of rotational power interruptions begin to rise. Yes, that means more frequent power outages could be on the horizon!
Stay Prepared
So, how can you prepare? It’s a good idea to have a plan in place in case of power interruptions. Consider charging your devices, stocking up on essentials, and staying informed.
While we hope the situation improves quickly, being prepared is key to ensuring you and your family remain safe and comfortable throughout the yellow alert period.
Final Thoughts
Power issues can be stressful, but staying informed helps ease some of that anxiety. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a swift resolution to these outages. Stay tuned for updates, and take care of each other during this challenging time!
