WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States is giving $30 million to help people in Gaza get food and supplies — even though some officials are worried that people are getting hurt or even dying while trying to get that help.
The group in charge of handing out the aid is called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). This is the first time the U.S. government is giving GHF money, even though it has supported the group in words before.
This group works with private U.S. military companies to bring food and supplies into Gaza. They say they deliver the aid to places called “secure zones” — but many of these zones are in areas where there’s still fighting and danger.
📝 How Did This Happen?
According to a document seen by Reuters (a trusted news group), the money was approved on Friday. It was signed off quickly by the White House and the State Department using something called a “priority directive.”
-
$7 million was already sent out.
-
More batches of $30 million could follow each month.
😟 Why Are Some People Worried?
Some U.S. officials are concerned because:
-
The GHF didn’t go through a normal financial audit (check-up), which is usually required before handing out government money.
-
They were also excused from security checks normally required when giving aid in dangerous places like Gaza, which is ruled by Hamas, a militant group supported by Iran.
-
Some officials don’t trust the for-profit companies working with GHF, like:
-
Safe Reach Solutions (led by a former CIA officer)
-
UG Solutions, which uses armed American veterans for security
-
💥 What’s Happening in Gaza?
Since Israel allowed some aid to come into Gaza again in May, more than 400 Palestinians have been killed, according to the United Nations (UN).
Many were shot or shelled as they tried to get food from distribution sites run by the UN and GHF.
“Most people died while trying to reach food in places surrounded by the military,” said Jonathan Whittall, a top UN aid official.
He also said:
-
Israeli forces have fired at crowds waiting for food.
-
Armed gangs are also hurting people and stealing aid.
🍱 GHF Defends Itself
GHF says it has already delivered 40 million meals to hungry families in Gaza.
The group said:
“None of our trucks have been looted. If the UN and others want to help, they’re welcome to work with us instead of criticizing.”
GHF also paused giving out aid for a day earlier this month to ask Israel to make things safer near food sites. They say no one has been hurt at their own locations.
⚠️ Why It’s a Big Deal
-
The U.S. is sending millions of dollars to help Gaza…
-
But people are still dying while trying to get that help.
-
Some officials are afraid the money might be wasted — or worse, cause more harm than good.
The United Nations said delivering aid in Gaza is already very hard. Roads are blocked, fighting continues, and looters attack trucks.
But they also say:
“If people trust that food will keep coming, they won’t fight to get it.”
🤔 What Happens Next?
Will the aid really help those who need it — or will it lead to more trouble?
Is the U.S. doing the right thing by giving money to a group without fully checking it first?
The world is watching closely, hoping the aid reaches the people… and not the crossfire.
