US Aid Arrives in Gaza Amid Deadly Airstrikes—What’s Next?

JERUSALEM / CAIRO — A new group supported by the United States has just started sending trucks full of food to the people living in Gaza, where many families have gone hungry because of the war.

This group is called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). On Monday, they said food had started reaching some areas where people need help the most.

But even as the food started coming in, Israeli airstrikes hit several places in Gaza, including a school, where dozens of people, including women and children, were killed.

Why Do People in Gaza Need Help?

Gaza is a place where over 2 million people live. Since a war began in October 2023, many homes, schools, and hospitals have been destroyed. Because of the fighting, very little food and supplies have been allowed in.

Children, moms, dads, grandparents—everyone—have been struggling to eat or find a safe place to sleep.

What’s the New Aid Plan?

The new group, GHF, says it will bring more trucks with food each day. They plan to give the food out through 4 big centers in the southern part of Gaza. They will check each family to make sure the help is going to the right people.

But some groups, including the United Nations (UN), don’t agree with how GHF is working. They say it’s not enough and that some of the ways GHF checks families—like using face scans or fingerprints—might not be fair or safe.

Some aid groups don’t even want to work with GHF because of this.

Who’s in Charge of GHF?

GHF’s leader, Jake Wood, quit his job just one day before food deliveries started. He said the group couldn’t follow important rules, like being fair and helping everyone equally. A new leader named John Acree took his place. He has helped people during disasters for over 20 years.

What About the Fighting?

Even while food trucks were rolling in, the war continued. On Monday:

  • At least 45 people were killed by airstrikes.

  • In one school, 30 people died, including children and moms who had nowhere else to go.

  • In another town, a house was bombed, and 15 people were killed.

Israel said it bombed the school because they believed it was being used by fighters from Hamas (a group in Gaza) to plan attacks. But many people inside were just tired and hungry families looking for shelter.

A woman named Farah Nussair, who survived the bombing, said:

“We fled to the south, they bombed us there. We went back north, they bombed again. Even schools and hospitals are not safe.”

What’s Next?

The U.S. wants the fighting to stop and is trying to help make a peace plan. Some reports say Hamas might agree to a truce (a pause in fighting), but Israel disagrees and says the plan isn’t good enough.

Meanwhile, countries like Germany and Sweden are telling Israel to stop hurting so many civilians. But Israel says it needs to stop Hamas from attacking and wants to take full control of Gaza.

So Far…

  • Over 53,000 people in Gaza have died, many of them civilians.

  • Most people in Gaza have had to leave their homes.

  • Food is slowly coming in, but it’s not enough.

  • The war still hasn’t stopped.

Even though trucks are finally bringing in food, the people of Gaza still face danger, hunger, and fear every day. They’re hoping for peace—and safety—very soon.
