Standing Firm: Defense Secretary Teodoro Addresses Chinese Sanctions
On Saturday, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. made headlines with a powerful statement regarding sanctions imposed on him and his family by China. This unexpected move, he believes, is a reaction to his ongoing campaign against illegal Chinese activities in the Philippines.
A Personal Reaction to Political Pressure
Under the sanctions, Teodoro, along with his wife and child, is now barred from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Furthermore, Chinese entities cannot engage in any transactions or activities with them. Though China claims these measures are in place to protect its national sovereignty and interests, Teodoro argues that they truly reflect his commitment to addressing the illegal actions of foreign entities in his homeland.
“It feels like a personal attack,” he admitted. “My family and I are facing sanctions because of what they call ‘erroneous statements’ I’ve made. But I’ve only shared the truth about the West Philippine Sea and their illegal activities here in the Philippines.”
Pushing Back Against Wrongdoing
Teodoro remains undeterred. “I will continue my role and work alongside government agencies to tackle these illegal actions,” he affirmed. He specifically cited the Bamban scam hub, allegedly linked to Alice Guo, and a recently closed steel manufacturing operation, Sanjia, known for producing substandard and contaminated products. The continued pursuit of justice is at the forefront of his mission, emphasizing that this isn’t about targeting Chinese citizens but rather about rooting out wrongdoing that undermines the nation.
Teodoro shared that some high-ranking officials from the Chinese Embassy have attempted to shield Sanjia from scrutiny, further complicating the issue. The owner, Tony Yang, is notably connected to Michael Yang, a controversial figure in politics. A recent arrest of Tony Yang for falsifying documents highlights the urgency of the government’s actions against these illegal operations.
The Bigger Picture
“This isn’t just about me; it’s about our country,” Teodoro insisted. “We cannot ignore the complexities of our bilateral relations simply because we want them to be good. China’s attempts to assert control over illegally occupied territories are unacceptable. Agreeing to this would be an act of treason.”
Facing this political landscape, Teodoro insisted that he’s received support from international allies who stand with the Philippines in upholding the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
“I wish our defense relations with China could be positive, but that’s not possible under the current circumstances,” he shared with conviction.
A Promise to the Nation
In his role as defense chief, Teodoro pledged to bolster the capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “We must stay alert to the actions of the People’s Republic of China,” he cautioned. “We’ve taken steps that led to their recent response. Imagine how they treat their own citizens and others in territories they forcibly occupy.”
He concluded with a heartfelt commitment: “You can count on me to continue this important work. Our strategy to strengthen national defense is clear, and we will reinforce our alliances with our partners.”
In a time of complex international relations, Secretary Teodoro’s determination resonates clearly: it’s about safeguarding national integrity, protecting the rights of the Filipino people, and remaining unyielding in the face of external pressures. As he carries on with his duties, hope remains that a balance can be struck between diplomacy and national defense.
