Stay Safe This Holy Week: Defensive Driving Tips for Drivers

A car magazine called AutoIndustriya.com reminded everyone to drive carefully this Holy Week, even though there are fewer cars on the road in Metro Manila.

On Thursday, April 17, the magazine shared a photo on Facebook. It showed a small SUV at a street intersection. The car had a broken hood, smashed headlight, and a damaged bumper—which means it was clearly in an accident. In the photo, you can also see a slipper and pieces of broken glass on the ground. This tells us the crash was serious.

The caption said:

“A reminder to drive safely even when there are fewer cars on the road.”

Some people who saw the photo commented online. They said the area in the photo is known to have many accidents. One person said:

“That place is accident-prone. I’ve seen so many crashes there. Many cars pass through that street in Banawe, but drivers don’t like to slow down at intersections.”

Others also reminded drivers that it’s important to slow down whenever they reach intersections. This is part of something called defensive driving.

What is Defensive Driving?

Defensive driving means being extra careful when you’re on the road. It’s about always being ready in case something unexpected happens.

For example, when you slow down before an intersection, it gives you time to:

  • Look both ways to see if another car is coming,

  • Spot any people walking across the street,

  • Or stop safely if a car suddenly appears.

Driving slower at intersections helps prevent crashes and keeps everyone safe.

Why Are the Roads So Clear?

Some people also noticed that the streets in Metro Manila look less busy during Holy Week. That’s because many families travel to their hometowns during this time to spend the long weekend with loved ones.

With fewer cars in the city, the roads may feel more open—but that doesn’t mean drivers should relax or drive too fast. Even when traffic is light, accidents can still happen if we’re not careful.
