BRUSSELS — Big drama is happening between Europe and Israel!
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that what’s happening in Gaza right now is a “catastrophic situation of genocide” — which means he believes many innocent people are being killed on purpose.
He also told the European Union (EU) to stop working with Israel immediately, especially when it comes to trade and cooperation. That’s a huge deal.
😠 Why is Sanchez so upset?
Sanchez has been one of the strongest critics of Israel’s actions in Gaza. He said a new EU human rights report showed that:
-
Too many innocent civilians are being killed
-
Humanitarian aid (like food and medicine) is being blocked from entering Gaza
-
Reporters are being attacked
-
Thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes
-
Homes, hospitals, and schools have been destroyed
He said it’s very clear that Israel is not following the rules in their agreement with the EU.
🚫 Sanchez: “This is unfair and must stop!”
Sanchez said the EU has punished Russia 18 times for attacking Ukraine, but has done nothing about Israel’s actions in Gaza. He called this a “double standard” and said:
“It doesn’t make sense to be strict with Russia but soft with Israel.”
He wants the EU to suspend its agreement with Israel now—but that’s not easy.
🇪🇺 Why won’t the EU act fast?
To stop the agreement, all 27 EU countries must say “yes.” But not everyone agrees, so nothing is happening yet.
At a big EU meeting in Brussels, the leaders said they “took note” of the human rights report but only agreed to talk about it again in July 2025 — more than a year from now!
Some people are frustrated because they feel that’s too late, especially with so many people suffering now.
🔥 What started the war?
The war in Gaza started on October 7, 2023, when the group Hamas attacked Israel. That attack:
-
Killed 1,219 people, most of them civilians
-
Took 251 hostages back to Gaza
-
Today, 49 hostages are still there, and 27 of them are believed dead
After that, Israel fought back hard. But now many people, including the United Nations and countries like Spain, are worried because:
-
Over 56,000 people in Gaza have been killed
-
Most of them are civilians like moms, dads, and kids
-
Homes, hospitals, and neighborhoods have been destroyed
-
The area is running out of food, water, medicine, and shelter
The United Nations says the numbers from Gaza are trustworthy.
🌍 What happens next?
Right now, there’s no clear answer. People like Prime Minister Sanchez want quick action, but some EU countries aren’t ready to agree.
Will the EU finally take strong action next year? Or will the fighting and suffering continue?
The world is watching—and waiting.
